Common Conditions Service at Mountmellick Local Pharmacy
Mountmellick Local Pharmacy provides a pharmacist-led clinical service for various everyday health issues. Operating under nationally approved HSE clinical protocols, our trained pharmacists offer professional assessments and treatments, ensuring you receive timely care with a focus on patient safety.
This service is reserved for specific ailments; if your condition requires further medical attention, we will provide a direct referral to your GP or a hospital.
What does the service include?
Our pharmacists provide expert healthcare advice and management for eight specific common conditions. During your consultation, a pharmacist will:
- Assess your symptoms to ensure the service is safe and suitable for you.
- Issue a prescription for medication if clinically necessary.
- Offer self-care guidance.
- Refer you to a doctor or hospital if the condition is outside the service's scope.
The eight covered conditions (and age requirements) are:
- Allergic Rhinitis & Allergic Conjunctivitis: Ages 2+
- Infective Conjunctivitis: Ages 6 months+
- Oral Thrush: Ages 1 month+
- Cold Sores: Ages 1 month+
- Impetigo: Ages 2 months+
- Shingles: Ages 18+
- Uncomplicated UTIs (Women): Ages 16–64
- Vulvovaginal Thrush: Ages 16–60
Fees and Medication
- Consultation Fee: €25.
- Medication Costs: The fee covers the professional consultation only. Any recommended over-the-counter or prescription medications are charged separately.
- Prescriptions: If a prescription is issued, you may dispense it at Mountmellick Local Pharmacy or any pharmacy of your choice. These items may be covered by the Medical Card or Drugs Payment Scheme (DPS).
How to Access the Service
You can access care via a walk-in visit or by requesting an appointment online.
- Online Appointment Requests
Click the "Request a Consultation" button for your specific condition below to complete a brief questionnaire. Our team will review your details during business hours and contact you to schedule a time for your in-pharmacy visit.
- Walk-in Consultations
Visit us in-store and speak with a member of our team. A Healthcare Advisor will provide a short questionnaire for you to fill out before you see the pharmacist. Please be aware that during peak times, there may be a wait for an available pharmacist.
- The Consultation Process
- Setting: Consultations are held in a private room and last roughly 10 minutes.
- Guidelines: Our pharmacists strictly follow HSE protocols and Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland guidance.
- Outcome: If the protocol determines the service is not suitable for your specific case, you will be referred to your GP or A&E. Otherwise, the pharmacist will conclude the session with a treatment plan involving prescription medicine, over-the-counter options, or self-care advice.
